These photographs depict the lead rakes at Ubley Warren, Charterhouse. These were formed during the time of recorded Roman activity in Charterhouse, from A.D. 49, about six years after the roman occupation of Britain. They excavated the lead veins, which were abundant on the surface around this area. This strangely undulating “man-made” landscape of gorges and bumpy ground, clearly visible under a carpet of grass and scrub, are a reminder of its history.
