April 2011, Priddy Mineries was subject to another kind of trauma, when they were accidentally set alight. I see the burnt Mineries as a metaphor for healing and renewal. Within a week strong new shoots were breaking through the surface and in three weeks re-growth was well under way. This tree is an iconic landmark of the landscape, the underside of the canopy was scorched but the tree remained unharmed. The new growth of emerging ferns resembles a sea of periscopes rising out of the cinders.
